My name is Dr Susan Ayarbe, welcome to my website. I hope you find it informative and useful. Please do not hesitate to pick up the phone to me, or drop me an e-mail if you would like a chat about your child or adolescent.

I started my practice because I passionately believe that we don’t all come “wired” the same way. These differences manifest themselves in multiple and complex ways, sometimes obvious, sometimes not. As parents, we try to do everything we can to help our children to maximize their potential. For some, a “standard” approach to education and the home, simply does not achieve this goal.

I work with parents, educational institutions and other professionals, to try and adapt these environments to better tap into an individual child’s capabilities. As Mel Levine wrote in A Mind At a Time (a must read for ALL parents!), “To treat all children the same is treat them all unequally”.

Cogmed is a non-medical intervention designed to improve working memory deficits.  Although used most frequently with children and adults with ADHD, Cogmed has also been shown to be helpful in improving working memory deficits in other diagnostic categories.  I have monitored the research for Cogmed for over five years.  I have to say that initially, I was very skeptical about its effectiveness and I relegated it to the same "do not recommend" category as  most other non-medical interventions such as biofeedback, neurofeedback, dietary interventions and vitamin supplementation.  However, from the beginning, the scientific theory and research set the Cogmed intervetion apart.  So I watched the research get published.  I watched it for five years, alternating between skepticism and hope.  Hope that maybe there was a non-medical intervention that might work and skepticism that maybe this was too good to be true.  Finally, as the evidence for the effectiveness of Cogmed continued to mount, I decided to add Cogmed to my practice.  I have done so becasue I believe in the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention and I believe in the science behind Cogmed.  Although I cannot guarantee benefits, I have added this program to the practice because I believe that it is an important option for indivduals who suffer because of deficits in working memory.
